Coral Bleaching

Coral reefs are the most diverse ecosystems in the oceans, housing approximately one out of every four marine species. They are primarily built by hard coral colonies that are composed of thousand polyps that contain millions of microscopic algae. These algae, known as Zoozanthellae, live in symbiosis with the corals. They gain nutrients and protection, and in turn provide energy to the coral so that it can build and skeleton. However of temperatures rise and corals become stressed, the Zoozanthellae are expelled and the corals become weak. Since Zoozanthanllae provide colorful pigments, when they are expelled the white skeleton becomes visible. This is called coral bleaching. Bleached corals are not dead yet, but they are extremely weak and prone to mortality.

Large microalgae can proliferate and grow over corals and killing them. When this happens, the reef can shift into a different form, dominate by algae. It becomes less useful to humans, with lower fish yields, less protection from storms, and lower revenue from tourism.

Global bleaching is often linked to major events, such as El nino. In 1998, a particuly intense caused a mortality of an estimated 16 % of the worlds tropical corals in a matter of months. Worringly, the frequency and the intensity of bleaching events are also increasing due to changes in the climates and subsequent rises in sea temperatures.

Climate change and coral bleaching are considered the most serious threat to coral reefs today, and some scientists even predict that they may go functionally extinct this century. However is possible for coral reefs to resist bleaching, that is resistance, or to recover relatively quickly after bleaching, that is resilliance.

Now many different ecological environmental factors affects the resistance of resilliance of corals and reefs to climate change. So its very important for managers to understand what these factors are so that they can protect their reefs more effectively. Things such as reducing pollution or reducing over fishing can very much help reefs to recover and resist climate change impacts. So the future reefs is very much in our hands.

Throw that Baby Bottle Away

Washing bottles when you have a baby or more in the house can be a time consuming chore that most mothers would prefer not to do, but clean bottles are a must. Sanitation is important for the health of your child. When you stop and think about all the germs that could be lingering in the bottle nipples, it might actually gross you out. That is why most mothers boil them at least once a week. When it comes time, you should consider taking your child off the bottle, the sooner the better.

If your child is almost a toddler, it is time to start thinking about transitioning your child off the bottle. When children sucks on bottles once they have teeth, it can eventually cause dental problems and I am sure that most parents would oblige to having their children grow up with a deformed smile when they could have prevented it. It is important to use baby step techniques with children who are attached to their bottle when transitioning to sippy cups. If the are not attached to the bottle, it just might be an easy transition.

If your child is already emotionally and physically attached to his or her bottle, the first thing you should consider is browsing through the baby department at all the different style sippy cups they have. Some have handles which your baby may not take to easily. It is probably best to find one that does not have handles, perhaps one that is designed like a bottle. For the unattached, I would start with the sippy cups that have handles. This gives the child better control of the cup since he or she cannot create a suction to hold it by mouth. If you start out with the handled cup, gradually transition your child to the sippy cup without handles before he or she turns two. “What about the spout?” you may be asking. Yes, this part of the sippy cup could make or break whether you child will take to it. There are soft, tipped sippy cups, usually made out if plastic or neoprene, giving your child more comfort when drinking. A parent is likely to go through every cup they can find on the store shelves before they find one that their child is likely to accept.

During transition, if your child is still on formula, you should always wait till your child’s first birthday to give them cow’s milk. Never give them pure cow’s milk right away. Start off mixing about 1/4 cow’s milk to 3/4 formula for a few days, then gradually blend 1/2 and 1/2, then within two weeks your child should be ready for whole cow’s milk. Cow’s milk is hard on little one’s bellies, so it is critical to start off with small amounts until your child gets used to it.

Some tips that always helped me as a parent:

- Be sure to put the baby at the table during meals times. This encourages the child to want to drink from a cup because he/she will see you drinking from one.

  • The earlier you transition your child the better. I switched my children to sippy cups at 6 months of age (sippy cup with handles). At this age they do not have as much of a preference for the type if cup you give them. My youngest son actually would never take a bottle, forcing the daycare staff to feed him with syringes, while he breast fed at home. The sippy cups he had no problems with. This can only be determined on a child by child basis because they do not all sit up on their own at 6 months or even eight months.

  • Once your child can move around on his/her own, immediately begin transitioning to real cups. They may take a while learning how to control their body while holding the cup, but like I said before, the earlier the better. Just keep them sitting down whild doing so.

  • If you child does not accept the sippy cup, do not force him/her. They will eventually take to one when they are ready. Just be sure to keep introducing it to them on a regular basis. For example, if your child absolutely dislikes the cup, put it away for a week. Exactly a week later, offer the cup again. They may refuse again. Put it away for another week, then try again. If it does not seem to help, increase your offerings to every three or four days. Stay consistent, but not forceful.

You should have gained some helpful tips from this writing. Children are not easy no matter the subject. Always remember to stay consistent and be open for changes.

Eliminating Acne as a Young Adult

I never thought at the good age of 26 I would still be getting acne. At this point, I just assume that it will keep coming back because it must be in my blood. My mother still gets acne. The worst areas for me to get acne is along my jawline and under my jawline or chin area. The acne is a combination of large pimples to smaller zits. I do wash my face, but it seems that the soaps that I use must be breaking my skin out. What do I do with this skin problem? It definitely is not a pretty site for anyone to see, but it must be taken care of.

After purchasing a sonicare spinbrush for my face and trying out the soaps that came with it, I was hoping for more beautiful skin. WRONG! It has only gotten worse. I would use the different soaps designed for the different types of skin, trying to keep my skin balanced. It is bad to use a different soap everyday, but these soaps were of better quality, so I thought it would be beneficial. WRONG AGAIN! So now I have this face that has blown up with acne, making me feel embarrassed and dirty. Afterall, who can stand acne? Especially when it is scarring your face.

There is a solution that I have tried. It is a cheap solution, and one that most people would not have heard of. It is likely that you already have these products sitting around your home. You guessed it, an all natural home remedy for treating acne. Yes, it will treat your acne better than any soap out there. Remember that soaps over the counter have more than enough products in them, and most companies blend soaps with products that actually are designed to make your face break out. It becomes a cycle so that you will still buy their product. Sounds ridiculous? Yes, it is! If they treated your acne forever than you would never buy their product again.

So what is this natural home remedy that I am talking about? Using food products on your face. These food products work wonders and help to develop your skin into the pretty face you have been waiting for. The remedy consists of one fruit and one vegetable, and there are a combination of other ingredients that you could always add for extra skin comfort. An orange and a cucumber. These are the foods that I have found and still currently use on my face daily.

It is the combination of both the cucumber and orange that have brought me results like I have never seen. No over the counter products have ever worked like these two foods. The process includes cutting off one slice of orange and one or two slices of cucumber, then applying them to your face. First, rub the orange over your entire face, making sure that you have either pulled your hair back in a ponytail or just use your hands to keep it out of the way. Be sure to rub it on your neck and under the chin also, as this is where my acne problem is, so I focus on this area the most. The orange will eventually break apart, with little pulp pieces coming off on your face. This is okay because it will not hurt you. Then you will let the orange juice sit on your face for about ten minutes. Rinse it off, making sure that you got any parts of the orange that might be lingering around your hairline. Next, apply the cucumber to your face the same way you applied the orange. Except you can leave the cucumber on for the rest of the day. Just make sure that no parts of the cucumber have not broken off and stayed on your face.

Using the orange will help to dry up the acne from the citric acid. It also adds Vitamin C to your skin, leaving it with a healthy glow. The cucumber cools your face and gives you a refreshing feeling. It is natural for the cucumber to pull redness and swelling out of your skin. This is why you see so many women putting them on their eyes when they have a facial mask on. The cucumber will leave your skin feeling softer than ever, making use of a facial lotion unnecessary. Apply these steps to your face twice daily for the greatest benefit.

Healthy skin starts with healthy starts. Who knew a simple fruit and vegetable could make your day!
